So the six of us rock up to the venue thinking how hard could this netball malarkey be? We’re all pretty fit people, I mean we work in a gym, so our confidence levels are high, even though only two of our team has actually played the game before, and it’s been 10 years for one of them. You can imagine our surprise when the opposition turns out to be a bunch of 13 year old school girls. This rings of the film Dodgeball!!!
You would think a team made up of four 6 foot plus men and two nifty women would be able to keep up with 4 foot school girls. Yeh right! First quarter they ran rings round us. I’m not even sure we had a shot at goal in the first 8 mins. They were running round the pitch like there’s no tomorrow. We had no idea what was going on.
Fortunately age and height has its advantages in the end. Second quarter we slowly started learning how to play netball. Mostly thanks to the ref as she seemed to blow the whistle for some kind of foul every two seconds. This game has too many rules. Just as you think you’ve got the point, the ref blows you up again for some new rule I think she’s made up on the spot. We slowly started to score and not let them in too much. Half time we were about evens.
Third quarter its all about Pulse. We dominated! We had no qualms we were going to win this.
Final quarter, we’re ahead, all we need to do is hold on. So being the genius’s we are, we all change positions. Bad idea! From the kick off it all goes wrong. Matt smashes the ball out of the refs hand into her face at the kick off. Instant foul it would appear (yet another made up rule me thinks). Then the girls get into their stride and just won’t let us have the ball. Score after score until they’re a goal behind. Isn’t it funny that the ref never blows for full time until their team is winning. The girls score one more to take it to evens then the whistle goes for full time. Draw, not bad in the grand scheme of things. We’ll take it any who’s. Now it’s time for a pint!
It was all great fun, and I’m only joking about the ref, she was a good sport. Thanks to the school girls too, they really taught us a few things about the game.
