You would think that after our first game we would be on a slippery slope down to the deepest darkest depths of the table. NO! We shall not surrender! After pulling out a draw in our first game we’ve gone on to triumph over two, yes two, other teams. I don’t know if it’s due to our obvious athletic abilities or our superior will to win, or mayhap it’s down to pure fluke and a ref who thinks it’s funny that a mish mash of gym peeps have decided to play social netball, and they feel sorry for us, what ever the reason, we seem to be doing really well.
I have to admit we have had one or two ringers in our team for the last two weeks. First we recruited Mike. Now Mike does still kind of work for Pulse, he has a kind of fill in roll when we get stuck, but he also happens to know how to play this game, and has played quite a high level (for a boy). He came in, scored most our points (sorry Alice it’s true but, you still got one or two) and even told us what we should be doing at the breaks. This sounds almost like coaching. If only he could come every week, by the end of the season we may know what we’re doing. Alas, as with working at Pulse his netball season with us has been just a dash of promise, and he won’t be playing any more games. At least we had in for one game. So long Mike, and thanks for all the fish. After our first glorious win, we went into the next game rather under manned. In fact we could only get half a team together. Kick off was at 6:30 and at 5:30 a third of the team we could get to play was sat in the pub hoping the game would be called off. This however is social netball, and games apparently don’t get canceled, all you do is steal players from other teams. This you may think would be a disadvantage, but not if you end up getting the two best social netballers in the world ever, to play for you. They ran around and scored and did all the things people who can play the game do. All very impressive. Next week we’re thinking of getting a team of ringers and just go along with a crate of Speights to support Team Pulse. It’s a cunning plan to retain our unbeaten record, sorry I don’t think I’ve emphasised the point enough, Team Pulse – UNBEATEN! Ha, take that other social netball teams, fear us for we are GODS!

Pulse in Winterfest 2010

Let me start by saying a big thank-you to all the people who came down to Earnslaw Park to support Pulse this Winterfest. It really makes the hard work put in by the team worthwhile when we see so many people enjoying themselves.
This year we put on two ‘shows’. The first being the Pulse Fitness Master Class, a show case of four of our favourite Les Mills Group Fitness Classes. We started off at 7am (very early, and very cold) with BodyJam, lead by one of Auckland’s top group fitness instructors, Chris Richardson. It was a great sight to see at that time in the morning, Chris, Holly, Carey and Amanda dancing away on stage warming everyone up. Next we moved on to BodyCombat, a martial arts based cardio workout that got the crowed really working. Then we had BodyPump, and finally slowed it down with BodyBalance at the end.
The whole performance looked amazing. Our instructors really out did themselves. We had the guys from TVNZ 1 Breakfast Show down to participate, and they really got into the atmosphere. A great morning but not the end of the day, we had one more performance - BodyJam In The Park!
This is the second year we’ve Jamed outside for Winterfest, but this year it really went off. Again we had Chris to lead everyone through the moves. With Holly, Carey and Amanda backing him up, they looked fantastic. A big thanks to Chris for flying down to help, and a big thanks to Amber, Simon, Matt, Ian, Holly, Alice, Amanda and Carey for making this years Winterfest something to remember for Pulse.
If you want to know more about these group fitness classes go to www.gymsqueenstown.com/groupfitness

Team ‘Pulse Fitness’ first Netball match 14/06/2010

So the six of us rock up to the venue thinking how hard could this netball malarkey be? We’re all pretty fit people, I mean we work in a gym, so our confidence levels are high, even though only two of our team has actually played the game before, and it’s been 10 years for one of them. You can imagine our surprise when the opposition turns out to be a bunch of 13 year old school girls. This rings of the film Dodgeball!!!
You would think a team made up of four 6 foot plus men and two nifty women would be able to keep up with 4 foot school girls. Yeh right! First quarter they ran rings round us. I’m not even sure we had a shot at goal in the first 8 mins. They were running round the pitch like there’s no tomorrow. We had no idea what was going on.
Fortunately age and height has its advantages in the end. Second quarter we slowly started learning how to play netball. Mostly thanks to the ref as she seemed to blow the whistle for some kind of foul every two seconds. This game has too many rules. Just as you think you’ve got the point, the ref blows you up again for some new rule I think she’s made up on the spot. We slowly started to score and not let them in too much. Half time we were about evens.
Third quarter its all about Pulse. We dominated! We had no qualms we were going to win this.
Final quarter, we’re ahead, all we need to do is hold on. So being the genius’s we are, we all change positions. Bad idea! From the kick off it all goes wrong. Matt smashes the ball out of the refs hand into her face at the kick off. Instant foul it would appear (yet another made up rule me thinks). Then the girls get into their stride and just won’t let us have the ball. Score after score until they’re a goal behind. Isn’t it funny that the ref never blows for full time until their team is winning. The girls score one more to take it to evens then the whistle goes for full time. Draw, not bad in the grand scheme of things. We’ll take it any who’s. Now it’s time for a pint!

It was all great fun, and I’m only joking about the ref, she was a good sport. Thanks to the school girls too, they really taught us a few things about the game.

Pulse 24

This is a new era for Pulse Fitness.
